‘Thermae Romae‘ is not giving away its first place, not even with the risk of getting cursed by Sadako.
It seems like people still can’t get enough of ‘Thermae Romae‘ as they helped it defend 1st place against the evil yet beautiful Sadako from ‘Sadako 3D‘. The comedy was seen by 264,566 people over the weekend and grossed another 363,750,350 Yen (4.54 million Yen). Adding the weekdays and the previous nine days, ‘Thermae Romae’ is currently standing at a total of 2,322,567 viewers and a cumulative revenue of 2,959,973,150 Yen (36.96 million USD) 16 days after its opening day. If it continues to maintain its current level of popularity, it’s most likely that it will become the most successful movie in Japan in the first half of 2012.

‘Sadako 3D‘, starring Ishihara Satomi, Seto Koji, Yamamoto Yusuke, and Hashimoto Ai, opened in 2nd place with 154,148 viewers (214 screens), which is a very good start for the 3D horror movie. Over the weekend, it grossed 246,414,100 Yen (3.08 million USD).

With the success of ‘Sadako 3D’, ‘Uchuu Kyodai‘ naturally had to step down one rank. After nine days it attracted 579,692 viewers and grossed 763,847,100 Yen, which means that the 1,000,000,000 Yen (12.49 million USD) record should be broken next weekend. ‘Meitantei Conan‘ moved to 4th place. Its cumulative result after 30 days at the box office is 2,505,386 viewers and a revenue of 2,975,049,400 Yen (37.15 million USD).

In 5th place was Tom Hanks‘ new movie ‘Larry Crowne‘, which was seen by 77,677 people and grossed 95,959,300 Yen (1.2 million USD) over the weekend. It’s also the only non-Japanese movie left in the top ten on the box office chart.
